Welcome to Colchester Swimming Club, a historic swimming club based in Essex with a legacy dating back to 1885. We pride ourselves on our commitment to excellence, community, and the development of swimmers at all levels.

Our Club is a SwimMark accredited club and one of the leading competitive swimming clubs in Essex and East region, with more than 600 members across swim squads, water polo, Masters and Academy.

The Club has achieved longstanding success, producing many national swimmers, US college student athletes and two GB swimmers, one Olympian and one Para-Olympian.

Job title:                 Head Coach
Contract Type:       Self employed
Working Hours:     30 hours per week - Early mornings, evenings, and weekends
Location:                Colchester Leisure World and Colchester Garrison.
Salary:                    Competitively based on qualifications and experience.

We are looking for a highly motivated and committed individual, who embodies our Club values and who is able to work collaboratively with fellow Coaches and the Committee, to join our successful Club.

This is a leadership role that will encompass responsibilities across the Club, with hours worked at sessions held during early mornings, evenings, and weekends but also involves attendance at County, Regional and National competitions.

The successful candidate will:

  1. Work closely with the Club Chair and Committee to set direction and performance targets for the Club, specifically relating to the Annual Development Plan and SwimMark Action Plan.
  2. Provide a committed and professional approach towards coaching, supporting each swimmer to reach their full potential.
  3. Work in collaboration with the existing coaching team to ensure the preparation of training session plans for all squads and help allocate water time to the squads accordingly.
  4. Coach the main squad training sessions, supporting the coaches of the development squads to ensure effective training plans for all swimmers.
  5. Maintain visibility across all squads to ensure all swimmers get exposure to the Head Coach.
  6. Ensure that the appropriate level of coaching is available for all training sessions.
  7. Ensure attendance across each squad is recorded and monitored, working closely with the Committee.
  8. Research, select and attend appropriate competitions, with supervised delegation to appropriately qualified coaches and team managers where necessary andassist in the planning of Colchester open meets and galas.
  9. Monitor swimmers’ progress and co-ordinate swimmer movements between squads in conjunction with the other squad coaches, and relay information to relevant Committee members in a timely manner.
  10. Perform a management role and deliver regular meetings for all coaching staff.
  11. Interact and consult with the Executive Committee.
  12. Attend to other such general/social duties associated with the post of Head Coach.
  13. Follow Health & Safety Procedures and the Swim England Child Protection Policy, Wave power.  Be aware of and adhere to the Emergency Action Plan (EAP) and Normal Operating Procedures (NOP) of all training facilities.
  14. Prepare risk assessments.

Skills and qualities needed:

  • Minimum SE Coach level 2 (working towards level 3 would be desirable)
  • Self-Motivated
  • High levels of technical knowledge
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Good time management skills
  • Full, clear driving license with own car.
  • Ability to motivate others

Please Note:

  • This appointment would be subject to receipt of satisfactory references and an enhanced DBS check.
  • Successful applicants would be expected to undergo a six-month probationary period and be subject to a three-month review.
